Well, the weather has never mattered as much as it does now that we're farmers.
The past few days have been doozies, that's for sure. Feels like we are being tested, like someone out there is saying, "Are you sure you want to be farmers? We'll see about that!". As new farmers, we have learned a lot after freezing rain, an ice storm, snow, snow, another ice storm and now rain. I'm thinking of it as a snow sandwich, ice storms are the bread and rain is a nice dipping sauce on the side. We still want to be farmers, so no worries. Here's a list of what we've learned this week.
sheep and cows are more resilient to extreme weather than we thought
sheep cannot gracefully walk on ice
get extra hay for livestock BEFORE the storm hits
snow after an ice storm is better than rain after an ice storm
make sure you have lots of movies and beer pre-storm as you might not be leaving your house for a few days
a road atlas makes a good de-icer
pre-storm: move animals closer to barn, just in case
