New WWOOFer, New Lamb!

HERE'S A QUICK UPDATE FROM MEGAN. BUT FIRST, COME SEE US AT THE RICHLAND PARK FARMERS MARKET THIS WEEKEND. WE'LL HAVE HERB PLANTS FOR SALE IN ADDITION TO SOME SPRING GREENS. PRE-ORDER HERE. ALSO, WE WILL BE HAVING A POTLUCK THIS SATURDAY. DETAILS HERE.  NOW FOR MEGAN'S UPDATE.

It’s once again been a busy week at Sugar Camp Farm. Tony came out today to help Jesse build a second shade shelter for the sheep, as only 7 or so seem to go under the first one at a time. The shade shelters will be especially great for all the little lambs. SPEAKING OF WHICH! Our first lamb was born on Tuesday morning/Monday night. We found her and her mom hanging out in the corner of the sheep paddock alone. The little tyke is a little stumbly when she walks. But oh so cute.

Here's our first lamb. This is right before we tagged her little ear.

We also had a little baby cow that was born on Friday! It’s usually just napping and can be hard to find in the tall grass, but he is pretty stinkin’ cute when you can track him down. He’s working on his mooing skills. (See video!) I didn’t realize that we were expecting cows, but a few more are also on the way!

On the vegetable side of things, we have been working hard to make the most of time between raining spells. The tomato plants have all been staked, and there are lots more ready to be planted as soon as the beds are dry enough. I have been spending some time in the greenhouse bumping up peppers and eggplants as well.

We planted a couple different varieties of Basil at the end of last week, and Lizzie has planted lots of herbs around the house and in the smaller beds that had some of the lettuces. The basil is looking great and the small herbs are are already sprouting! We have even more herbs in the greenhouse too and will plant those as soon as we can. (Look for the awesome herb plants at market - I think we will be selling some there, if you would like to grow your own).

In other greenhouse news, Lizzie and I are experimenting with growing succulents. She will have to keep you posted in the coming months.

We are expected a new WWOOFer to join us tonight, and are excited to share an awesome meal with her husband and friend. Lizzie is working on dinner as I speak, and we are experimenting with making homemade cheeses – I really hope this works! (UPDATE! Marni is here and she's great! Here she is!)

The ducks are happier than ever, and are now roaming freely around the house instead of being fenced in or in their coop. They’ve taken to swimming in a small kiddie pool that we have set up for them and we are hoping to get them in the pond soon.

Harvest last week was aided by cool weather, and help from Hillary! She is always a joy to have around, and we were able to share an wonderful meal with Tony and Susie as wellFriday. They cleaned the house for Lizzie before she arrived home from her work conference. What a blessing!

I think that is about all here. Lots to look forward to, and I am so happy with how great being at Sugar Camp has been. I hope to see you all at the potluck this Saturday!
