CSA Week 17 and Update!
Hi friends!
So sorry (especially to you monday folks) that I didn't get the email out earlier. We've been in Irma prep mode. Harvey brought 6 inches of rain and caused some erosion in the soil so we wanted to be prepared. Plus, we wanted to get some more seeds in the ground before all this good rain!
We got carrots, beets, red and green mizuna, arugula, 3 types of mustard greens, lettuce mix, minutina, purple daikon, watermelon radishes, pink beauty radishes, red icicle radishes, and turnips in the ground yesterday! So yay! My current MO is "Keep on planting." And so we shall till we run out of space.
We don't have much else to report. No news is good news on the farm. We had to take the truck to the shop AGAIN! because the 4WD wasn't engaging properly. But we get it back today. We had some killer markets last Thursday and Saturday and hope to continue with successful markets for as long as we go to market this year. It's really the highlight of our week. We love seeing our regular customers, CSA members, Market Credit members, fellow vendors, and friends!
The sheep are doing fine and being sheepish as they do! Through out the summer, Jesse and his dad or Turner or someone have been moving the sheep once a week to new pasture. as the grass growth slows down we will start moving them more frequently throughout the winter. It's amazing to think that we have 4 generations of sheep on our farm in just 3 years. We have future dreams of expanding our grass-fed meat operation one day. And maybe even introducing laying hens and/or broilers (meat chickens) but we are taking it slow and one year at a time!
As the fall and winter approach, we tend to start taking stock of everything that is working for us and everything that's not so we can plan to improve, tweak, refine, and hone our farming operation during the winter. We are always open to feedback from you. We will send out a survey at the end of the year but feel free to send us an email directly any time.
So without further ado, here is your CSA week 17!
Sweet Potato Greens in Coconut Cream
I figured you may be tired of eggplant by now and running out of ways to use it.
So you may find this useful:
We always recommend freezing or dehydrating items for winter use so they don't go to waste! We do this with almost all the produce we have!
When we get home from market we dry any fresh herbs or sometimes we make a pesto or chimichurri to store and freeze it so we can use it over the winter.
We don't like wasting food, although on a farm, it's sometimes unavoidable. At the very least we compost it so it will go back into the earth or give it to the animals.
Anyhow, that's it!
Thanks so much for your support as always!
Love, your farmers,
Lizzie (Birdie), Jesse, Tony, Regan, Noah, Molly, Winnie, Stormy, Sheep and Cows!
